Norwich Cathedral chose BBC Fire & Security to provide the Fire Detection and Alarm System for the new Visitor Centre.
The new Visitor Centre is the largest project undertaken at the Cathedral in recent times and has been built within the original footprint and remaining walls of the original monastic Hostry and Refectory.
BBC Fire & Security successfully won the contract due in the main part on the strength of the existing relationship. For Cathedral Sacrist, Roger Lee; “The company has been second‐to none in the quality of its responsiveness and maintenance support over many years,” he says. “Equally, we have been completely satisfied with the both the resilience of the Notifier equipment and the fact that it is very easy for our staff to operate.”
The final installation utilised a Notifier Alarm Panel, manufactured by Honeywell, and networked with the existing Notifier system, installed by BBC Fire & Security in the Cathedral and adjoining Refectory restaurant and coffee shop.
The new installation includes a voice alarm system which forms an integral part of the solution to allow controlled evacuation from each building in the event of a fire‐related incident.

“One of our strengths is to provide systems and solutions that aim to retain the historic fabric and be sympathetic with the architectural significance of the building.
During the tender process obvious difficulties were present in terms of access, aesthetics, detection performance and design. So in order to meet the exacting requirements of both the customer and legislation new technologies and state of the art products were employed.
Notifier equipment is perfectly suited to such multi‐purpose and challenging environments, as it is robust, highly flexible and can be installed with the minimum visual impact and disturbance to the building fabric.
The new building includes a wide range of facilities, including a visitor exhibition centre, choir song school, classrooms and conference facilities. Notifier provides a similarly high level of protection for the main Cathedral, a very different building containing priceless artefacts.”
